It's not as simple as she makes out.

Jeremy, while I don't believe in monopolies, I'm not so sure barring DSTV from broadcasting EPL is a good idea. Simply because there are no Nigerian broadcasters who will do it justice. I've spoken about how far we have to go when it come to becoming world media players. There won't be any EPL for the first few weeks of this season. And I'm yet to be convinced that there's a carrier who'll do the EPL justice. I'd support Nweke (OBJ's rottweiler in chief) if there was an alternative, but there isn't one.Nkemhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16179240558587295386[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8686769.post-1155549160219246162006-08-14T10:52:00.000+01:002006-08-14T10:52:00.000+01:00yep Trae its all me.. I would have thought that AIT would set up "AIT Sports" to benefit from this change.

Then again, AIT is probably on the wrong side of Nigerian Government after breaking some exclusive news about the plane crashes last year.Remihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17372039534509405848[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8686769.post-1155488185247619632006-08-13T17:56:00.000+01:002006-08-13T17:56:00.000+01:00This is one of the rare Nigerian policies I fully ...This is one of the rare Nigerian policies I fully support. It's an insult for a company to bid for exclusive rights for the whole of Africa. If no Nigerian company can afford the rights to show the EPL in Nigeria then we should do without it. Simple. We must start to develop our local media industry and this means we need to implement protectionist policies just like the indians.Bjdon[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8686769.post-1155484674029629582006-08-13T16:57:00.000+01:002006-08-13T16:57:00.000+01:00Was just thinking about an idea for an African CNN...Was just thinking about an idea for an African CNN or Al-Jazeera yesterday. If you read guardian.co.uk of today, you'll see an argument by a diversity director with in the BBC for reporters to actually come from the areas on which they report and not have constantly white reporters, with a sea of black faces in the background, saying "oh look at them" with actually no understanding of the cultural issues of the area. Even if it could be done on the internet, it would be seen as much more authenic and credible. It's only a matter of time.

Excellent news about the Negroponte laptops now all they have to do is get the infrastructure in place!

Another good point raised during your post, was the idea of Nigerians "nigerianising" the western content and selling it back to the West. There is a lot of interest in receiving information from less mainstream sources (look at the success of the blogosphere). Nollywood is the 3rd largest film industry in the world, behind Bollywood and Hollywood and there is a global appetite for these films.Anonymous[email protected]
