I said as much in my response to Onyeka's post on Facebook. The lesson for AWF and such organisations is that they should either confer recognition or ensure that they have the money at hand before they make any monetary awards, as has been suggested by Frederick. This is a lesson I am sure AWF will be willing to bank on.

As for Onyeka, it is his right to complain and to seek redress to any level he is willing to go.

Dr J, well said. About time, I saw some communications on this matter on the listserve authorsinlagos and it seems that it is all to "common" and accepting by the writers. I however, do agree with Onyeka, it is unacceptable. I wuld have done same. Organisers should not in advance that unless they have the money they should make no monetary committment...

Well said Jeremy. It all boils down to acute 'grandstanding syndrome', an ailment synonymous with Nigerian money people. I hail Onyeka's courage and wish him more success and more - paid - awards in the future. As for award organizers, they should know the truth, and that... writers are usually happy just to be recognized. if you don't have money, just give the award without empty promises.
