Christ Church

For years I have passed by Nicholas Hawksmoor's Christ Church opposite Spitalfields and longed to stop awhile and venture inside. Various trivial reasons have stopped me. But I'm glad to have waited so long to have delayed and deferred the pleasure. As with other Hawksmoor's churches in London, Christ Church has recently been renovated. Hawksmoor was a genius, a student of Christopher Wren (St Pauls), there is something compelling about his use of scale and verticality. However, it is the inside where one is forced into a silent awe and humility. The tenebrous light, the elegance of proportion, the use of material are all a work of pure genius.
