Hello Jeremy,

This is serious business, when Yoruba women expose themselves like this.

When Ladoke Akintola ran the gauntlet of women protesting like this in the 60s the accepted myth is that he was dead not long after.

If I recall something my mother told me years ago, no Yoruba man would wait to savour the strength of feeling that involves a woman stripping herself bare in protest.

For this to happen in this day and age, something really has to give and it would not be the women, not after this.

If there is a particular personality being targeted by this action, the myth would follow that the personality would be honoured with an obituary very soon.

Fear an angry Yoruba woman that strips in protest, that is a stern admonition.

Regards,

Akin

The revolution shall be led by women. Nigerians, stop settling. Start telling the govt "enough".
The government should be afraid of the people, not the other way around!

Ms. Catwalq 12:43 am

this is the beginning of the end....how did we get to this point where the women went naked?

Didi,  12:45 am

Er I think the men should spare us their nakedness. It's not particularly attractive. ;p

Wow! I remember in Warri, Effurun actually, early 90's, there was a peaceful demonstration and Mobile Policemen started using excessive force and some old women came out totally naked. The MPs ran for their lives.
Tradition, superstition, no matter how enlightened you are, there is something to be said for the power of the nakedness of an old woman in protest. "person eye no de see old mama bia bia"

i hear also that some married women have done same because of cheating spouses. i guess the madness needs to stop!!!
I can't understand why people are so desperate for power that they are willing to maim each other, why?

Nice Anon 2:14 am

dapxin 11:38 am

curse sabi classroom technicality-ism too :)

Anonymous,  1:08 pm

yeah, this is my take too, last anon. it looks so staged and organized.. thats not to say organized protests are a sham, but i'm pretty certain- especially in the nigeria of today, that these women are just pawns or props if you will, sent out by fat cat politicians to serve their own ends.
Many years ago in lagos, armed robbers visited (what else can youcall it?) my brother's elderly neighbour. The minute she saw them she began to strip (in naijaspeak, "nekkid ha self". The previously fearless thieves immediately shielded their eyes ( while still wielding their guns) saying "Oh OH oh, mama, why are you doing this noOW? please stop it, mama, PLEEEase". Mama kept stripping. The hoods fled for their lives. Mama's strip came from the belly- from her gut. She MEANT that curse, and the boys believed her.

Anonymous,  1:23 pm

@anonymous 1:08, so your own mama's strip meant it but not these women? Bitch, please!

Arin,  1:36 pm

to anon 1.08 and you think these women's action is not from a deep place of rage? In all the years that there has been election malpractice in Nigeria and this part of Yorubaland, why haven't we witnessed this type of action women? Why now? Anon 1.08, you must have a really low opinion of women (i don't care if you are a man or a woman) to think that they cannot feel enough rage to feel that this is their last result. Perhaps you have no sense of the extremities such women have to be pushed to do this kind of thing. As such you cannot appreciate the enormity of it. I am sure the ruling party are not taking this action lightly. They are probably very worried.

Anonymous,  1:54 pm

At all oh. But seriously dem neva strip yet abi? abi strip and bare breast get same meaning?

Saymama 2:16 pm

I'm very impressed by this. Enough of the cheating, lying, oppressive men ruling our country!

Tairebabs 9:07 pm

This was really serious o! I am still in shock at the pictures.

Anonymous,  11:08 pm

This is arranged. Paid for. Which makes it insulting to all those women who strip because it comes from a place of pain, and truth.

I can't believe anyone would dare cheapen what has always been a sacred form of protest. By cheapening it, they strip it of its potency.

Sugabelly 3:41 am

@Catwalq: Nudity has always been an accepted part of Nigerian (and in the wider sense African ) culture. But people always try to use Christianity and Islam as an excuse to bash nudity. The fact is, traditionally breasts are not a big deal. If we feel uncomfortable with them now, then we have the cultures of those who brought us Christianity and Islam to blame.
Personally I am completely comfortable with nudity. It should be respected as an age old form of protest.

I don't think we've "come to anything".

ISA YUGUDA 4 PRESIDENT 5:40 pm

saggy tits...fuck mama fuck...what the fuck? We need fuller tits to protest.

Sugarbelly should be with these ladies...

N.zeit,  6:55 am

I know and understand the significance of the act but ...
I am completely out of the loop because after reading comments, I still do not know who or what they are protesting against.

Can somebody tell us please?
