Convoy madness

A woman is stripped and beaten by naval officers in Lagos on Monday for failing to make way for a convoy. See the story here and a film of the beating here (on CNN's I-report site).

This is just the height of barbarism. When is this nonesense going to stop. Why are people in Nigeria not doing anything about it?

Respect to that young woman who was fighting fiercely. If I was a woman in that situation, I would more than likely try to run away. She wasn't phased by the barrage of bullies aka body guards.

She stood her ground and didn't buckle, God bless her.

Such courage and spirit.

I watch this video and think there is something terribly wrong with me.

This would not happen if I did something about it.

I am so ashamed of myself.

I am so ashamed.

On the day before history is made in America, Nigeria is moving backwards. What kind of RUBBISH is this? Enough is ENOUGH. I am tired of it all...

What gave them the right to not only beat her up, but strip her off her clothes? Are we living in a war-torn zone where barbarism is at least expected?

My heart sunk when I saw this video. Can you see the size of those buffoons! How on earth who people do this an get a way with it. Who the hell is Arogundade Rear Admiral my foot. Has he got a wife, mother or daughter? the Director of Information, Nigerian Navy, Commodore David Naibada, had th e guts to open his big mouth to utter such a stupid statement that she "provoked" one of the errand boys!! I was at work when I watched the video I just couldn't help it. These people must be brought to book. Arogundade mustn't go scot free 'cos his "boys" were trying to impress him. Where was he going that it was so urgent so it was no longer urgent when they had to stop and humiliate the poor girl. He could have called them to order haba! Governor Fashola is a lawyer i belive he knows the implication of what has happened and the incident occured in his area of jurisdiction. But Kudos to the girl.Has the military started ruling again?

You guys haven't seen anything yet...Nigeria is a jungle. This year, before my return to the UK, 15 armed NDLEA men broke into my hotel room in Asokoro Abuja, and turned the place upside down, searching everything and anything including under the carpets etc. Nothing was found but they still took me away and detained me for some hours in Gwags. But for a minister who intervened and contacted their Abuja area commander who confessed to being unaware of the operation. A hotel I had been staying at since June 2007 when I arrived in Abuja to take up a contract with an IT consulting firm. What a sham. I dropped the case for obvious reasons. Corrupt bastards. One day will be one day

me,  6:57 pm

This is the most disgusting thing I've ever read.

I believe that one day, change will come, even to Nigeria. We must never give up, never accept it as "normal". Injustice is not normal. Corruption is not normal. As long as we refuse to accept it, someday, change will come.

HOW DARE THEY!,  11:49 pm

I work in Human rights, they need to shame these stupid Naval officers, and what they have commited is an international crime 'crimes against humanity' Article 7 paragraph K Rome Statute of the ICC.
First step, write amenesty international and human rights watch. Local media should make alot of noise about and bloggers condemn, Your president must take note of this and that stupid spokes person shd be given the sack. We can do it!

Kody 6:00 am

I've been sent the video link by so many people.I just can't bring myself to watch it because I know how it will make me feel. I am already angry with so many things that have happened in Nigeria lately, and this will only set me off.

With all the surrounding publicity and public outrage, I am confident the lady will get justice.

I...I ...I am beside myself with rage!

Olu,  6:12 am

Somebody said, "With all the surrounding publicity and public outrage, I am confident the lady will get justice."

Justice? Is there any such thing as justice in Nigeria? If there was justice, those navy officers would have been concious of that in the first place and they would not have acted like baboons. The rule of law is a myth in Nigeria. Lets accept it and work from that as a starting point.
