Omigod - Boris?

Unbelievable - its looks like London, in its collective (as)inanity, has elected that utter buffoon Boris Johnson to be the new mayor. The only thing I've picked up from Boris' campaign is that he is going to ban the bendy buses as soon as possible. I guess there's quite a few people in London who are old enough to vote but young enough not to know what a complete daymare the Tories are when they have power. Expect all the good things Ken brought in - such as free passes for kids and pensioners - to be phased out. Above all, expect ineffectual leadership from a prize pillock..

ha ha ha.

It's more a vote against Labour than a vote for Tory. Bouncing Boris was at the right place at the right time.

People are sick and tired of Brown's taxes, Labour need to put the squeeze on him if they are to avoid the downward spiral. There is evident poverty everywhere you go in the UK, people are just scraping by, every price is being put up and taxes and penalties are rising above inflation, crazy, just crazy.

A city like London should be run by the Liberals anyway. Too bad the Lib Dems didn't go all out for it.

u'r not the only one in shock. after all ken did they vote for Boris? the lib dem man seems so much better while Boris lied or evaded simple questions on question time. wonders shall never end! anyway na london, anything is possible.

He has just been declared winner.

We are finished.

I'm still reelling meself. Boris has proven himself to be a prize pillock but he has managed to get himself voted in cause of how disappointed Londoners are in Gordon Brown (he also just managed to avoid any major gaffes in the last year).

The three main candidates were on Question time last week and crime and the deaths of the teenagers on london's streets was one stick Boris was hitting Ken with. I wonder what the next four years will mean for London?

It is truly a sad day for London

Ken is a victim of his own arrogance. And the incompetence of the Mr Bean, sorry, Brown. And the vile unpleasantness of the Evening Standard.

Ah, well...I used to like London

Boris Johnson is the man. Please dont call him a buffoon. He is a mad man for a mad city!

Unbelievable. The uneducated, illiterate mass hordes of filthy londoners have voted for somebody I did not explicitly approve of. People who don't have a PhD like me are too stupid to pick their own leaders and need to be told by intelligent left-wing people like myself what to do

The only thing I've picked up from Boris' campaign is that he is going to ban the bendy buses as soon as possible.
I haven't really been paying attention to the campaign

I guess there's quite a few people in London who are old enough to vote but young enough not to know what a complete daymare the Tories are when they have power.
Even though the Tories won 4 general elections in a row, it was a terrible time in the history of Britain where there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth. Anybody who doesn't agree with my version of history is a spawn of the devil and deserves to die

Expect all the good things Ken brought in - such as free passes for kids and pensioners - to be phased out.
Even though these freedom passes were brought in by the government as part of a national subsidy and not by Ken, remember that any good thing that happened while Ken was in power was down to Ken. Ken freed black people from slavery and cried at the abolition of slavery celebrations. Boris is out to destroy children and pensioners. Did you know that he also eats babies?

Yes, Above all, expect ineffectual leadership from a prize pillock..
Yes, I don't like him and that means he can't do anything good. Only I Jeremy know what is good for London. I would prefer the leadership of someone who invites jihadist preachers to London that hate women and gay people rather than someone who is posh and went to public school which as you know is the worst crime ever to be committed on the planet and must never be forgiven, especially as I am not posh and didn't go to public school and have no chip on my shoulder

It's all Bean's fault, he's an over ambitious bumbling buffoon ... Ken shouldn't have gone back to Labour ... I cringe at the thought of this great city being run by the Tories ... I sense a bloodbath coming ...

Seriously, this is a wake up call for Labour. I do like Gordon Brown, but the everyday economic realities faced by the Londoner have sown seeds of dissaffection. I think he should fall on his sword. We don't deserve the Tories again. London is far too complex to be handed to a myopic twat like Boris Johnson. The Olympics and Crossrail collectively will deliver close 20bn into the London economy and cushion the shock of the global economic downturn. The 300 odd hectares that is the Olympic site will be finally integrated into the city and lift the surounding areas that have suffered decades of neglect, areas that are predominantly the home of ethnic minorities who the Tories do not care for. The Thames Gateway strategy that Ken championed is directing investment in an industrial wasteland providing jobs and much needed housing. Ken has shaped a coherent London spatial policy in the London Plan. Ken has worked hard to safeguard the production of affordable homes by making it mandatory for developers to deliver a portion of this in new build schemes. Ken increased the number of buses in London and fought for REAL investment in transport. Mr Brown's insistence on PPP led to the Metronet fiasco. Ken has shaped London and positioned this great city to be the dominant world city for decades to come. This is now at risk in the hands of the Tories. Boris referred to black people as 'piccaninies' I shudder at the thought of such a racist running the most diverse city in Europe, it really is frightening.... can someone wake me up from this nightmare!!!

Boris Johnson isnt much different from Ken. Both very arrogant men but the truth is that Boris came across more personable in these elections. Like or hate him but really he worked damn hard during this campaign and did not have too many gaffes....

Nonetheless, it has been a distastrous week for labour. This David Cameron led Tories know how to package shit and sell it well. Sadly, folks are buying into their shit. Labour might be different with David Milliband as leader ..

Jeremy 8:46 pm

Thank you for your all-too-predictable abuse Lola Ayorinde II (aka Kemi).

On Boris and policy: I watched the tv this morning and again all I heard was abolish bendy-buses and some vague guff about policing. Even in the interviews after the result, Boris Buffoon is clearly shocked at the responsibility bestowed upon him: overseeing the Olympics, ensuring Cross Rail finally happens, taking a firm grip on violent crime and security issues in the capital, keeping London at the forefront of global capital... all this from an Eton toff whose sole experience of management was running a little-read Tory rag for a few years with a history of inappropriate behaviour..

Its somewhat absurd that someone so massively unsuited for the role can have been granted it. The Evening Standard's longstanding hate campaign against Livingston must surely have been what tipped the balance..

Akin,  9:15 am

Just watching Andrew Marr this morning... All the panelists talk about Boris Johnson being a candidate of hope and ones who cheers people. Andrew Marr also concurs!

I strongly suspect this kemi chick either has a secret (and massive) crush on Jerry boy, or is highly intimidated by him and is therefore lacking in self esteem where he's concerned.

As for boris, i agree with controversial anon. Ole boy was at the right place at the right time..

Nobody (formerly Idemili) 11:03 pm

Controversial: Too true! If only Paddick were not so boring. The contest was about personalities and Paddick just didn't have enough.

kemilola,  2:02 am

Yes Kemi, can u please use your full name. You are making other Kemis look bad!

p.s. why would you be "retranslating" and not just translating?

Also have you ever considered that Jeremy's readers actually enjoy Jeremyspeak - hence why they keep logging on........

anonymaus,  2:24 pm

Jeremy, it's not often I've noticed you come out with a clear and unambiguous statement on events be it in the UK or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

I heard the news on the BBC world service. I can't say too much about Boris, he's an unknown quantity to me. I do know of Ken Livingstone though. When I was living in London, he seemed to be in touch with the masses. So what caused them to turn their backs on him, puzzles me. Hopefully this is not the end of his political career!
